BLOG #5: VISUAL ARTS REFLECTION

Reflect on what you have learned about visual arts elements and principles:

What I have learned about visual art elements and principles will help me explain to students about textures, seasons, and much more.

analyzing the art of professional artists:

By letting students analyze the art of professional artists they are able to critical think about what their picture means, how it makes them feel, and what it could be showing.

Using children's picture book illustrators as an entrance to both understanding

As students use picture book illustrators as an enhance understanding, they are reading a story, looking at the picture, and know what the picture means from the story. It helps them understand (by help of teachers) how dark colors make the pictures have certain moods.

making art.

Students use story books to help them have ideas of what to create. It helps them in their mind have an idea of what they can create, and then they make it into their own.

Reflection on Music

After reading the text, working with music in class, and preparing your group presentation (as well as the other groups), what are your thoughts about using music in the classroom and particularly, how do you want to use music in your classroom?

I like the idea of using music in the classroom because that is how I learned best. Music put with a subject helped me in so many ways, that I know i will use more and more ways of learning with music in my class.

I will make sure that I have a soft song playing when they come in, when it's "quite reading time" and when they are working on individual assignments (math, spelling, etc.). I will aslo use music by letting the kids create their own songs about a subject (planets, states, counties, etc). My students will also (with lower grades) let students create music with instruments to help them realize that if they create something, it doesn't have to be like everyone else.

Reflection #3 DANCE

Think about the reading and the activities we did in class, as well as your own experience with dance in elementary school. Think about how this approach to childrens' creative dance might be different than studio dance (jazz, ballet, hip hop, etc.) or social dance - why do you think children's dance specialists might focus more on childrens' creative dance for education?

Creative dance gives the children advantages in creating new things, helps with letting students get out of "the box" of learning, and gives them a chance to show off the different creative ideas each student has.

How do you think you might use dance in your own teaching?

I'll probably use dance as a way of teaching about different cultures in Social Studies, as well as dancing about the subject of a book. Another way to teach dance is about feelings, let them show their feelings.

Reflection #2 DRAMA

Reflect on any new perspectives you have gained about using drama in your future classroom.

In learning about drama, i didn't know about the different ways of teaching it. All I thought about with drama was plays, acting out stuff etc. I never thought about having talk shows, or interviews.

Why and how do you think you will use drama techniques and strategies?

Already we have seen some amazing ways to incorporate drama into our lesson plans. I'll make sure to use them because it will help my students express themselves in a way that is not in the everyday way. Also it helps them show what they are learning through another perspective.

What specific activities do you think you will use most as you begin teaching?

I'm pretty sure I'll be using the interview one where the student has to figure out who he/she is talking to by what they are saying.

What are your thoughts on integrating drama with other curricular areas?

I think drama is a great way to teach other curriculum. Social Studies would be my big one with teaching drama. There are so many ways to bring social studies into drama that could help my students understand and comprehend a subject that most dote on as "boring."

Reflection #1

I'm really excited about this class. Not only have I learned many new idea of how to teach art in the classroom, but i've used it in my life to help calm my nerves. As I've been writing lesson plans for my other classes I've been able to incorperate drama into them. One lesson has the students acting out a case for the Cherokee Nation against the Trail of Tears. They have to have reasons why it was against the law, what happened, dates, names, and present it before a jury. It not only helps them remember the information they learned, but it helps with their social skills, creative critical thinking and overall moral of the class.

It's important to teach with, in and through the arts because students are then able to use the information they are learning and turn it into something they can use in the future. I've been writing down each and every activity we are learning, plus adding my ideas and thoughts into them because I have realized how important art is in the classroom.
